Michaelangelo Moran is an irrepressible entrepreneur. Along with high-school friend Nadiem Makarim, he co-founded and is Brand Director of GO-JEK, one of the biggest business success stories and the first unicorn to come out of Indonesia. The leading mobile app tech company provides transport, courier, shopping, food delivery and other services in 14 cities. “GO-JEK, as you know, is Indonesia’s revolution, and it’s amazing to be part of something that is clearly changing the nation,” says Moran.
In addition, Moran, who earned a degree in Business Management from Boston University in 2003 and Digital Design degree from Academy of Art in San Francisco in 2010, has co-founded Semua Properties Bali, which he calls “an end-to-end solution” for real estate, and also Arc MediSpa in Kemang, Jakarta, a beauty aesthetic and wellness company that provides non-surgical treatments. He somehow also finds time to be one of Indonesia’s leading DJs. “DJ Mikey” performs internationally as well as in Jakarta and Bali.
Asked to define what it takes to succeed as an entrepreneur, Moran advises: “Stay grounded. It’s easy to sway away and be caught up in it all. Remember to keep on your toes and be flexible, because you never know what kind of a curve ball is going to be thrown at you. Be fearless as well. You can’t get to where you need to go without taking some risks.
“What I’ve learned about myself is that we are all human. I’ve been through a lot of big ups and big downs, but you have to remember to take care of yourself and not push the limits. I have also learned that being successful has its perks, but you will only feel complete if you are happy at the end of it.”
